Dr. Alexander Hristov
Associate Professor
Department of Dairy and Animal Science
Pennsylvania State University
University Park, PA
Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from the Bulgarian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Research Scientist with the Institute of Animal Sciences, Kostinbrod, Bulgaria; Visiting Scientist with the US Dairy Forage Research Center, Madison, WI; Research Scientist with Agriculture and Agrifood Canada, Lethbridge, AB; Associate Professor with the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, University of Idaho, Moscow, ID; and currently Associate Professor of Dairy Nutrition with the Department of Dairy and Animal Science, Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA. Taught graduate level Ruminant Nutrition and undergraduate Horse Nutrition courses. Main field of research is ruminant nutrition. Studied N metabolism and transformations of feed N in the rumen, silage preservation and digestibility, amino acid nutrition of dairy cows, microbial protein synthesis in the rumen, defaunation and effect of rumen fauna on ruminal fermentation and animal performance, use of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes as feed additives for ruminants, and carbohydrate and protein effects on ammonia utilization in the rumen of dairy cows. More recently, research is oriented to the area of nutrient management, particularly reducing nutrient excretions from dairy operations, whole-farm nutrient balance, estimating ammonia losses from manure, and use of stable isotopes to trace sources of nutrient pollution. Ad hoc reviewer for various scientific journals and US and international funding agencies; Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Animal Science.
