Dr. McElroy is involved in the development and applications
of research to address concerns of the broiler industry and improve
efficiency and profitability of broiler production. Research
interests are in the areas of physiology and immunology. Her primary
research program involves the investigation of non-classical
mechanisms of immunity, with particular emphasis on intestinal
mechanisms of immunity to pathogens. Dr. McElroy is particularly
interested in investigation of innate and non-specific immunity of
the intestine and how it can be modulated, by vaccine administration,
dietary inclusions, or other means, to increase disease resistance.
Current research includes the identification and investigation of
effector cells in the chicken gut in response to intestinal
pathogens, the specificity and role of these responses in the
development of partial or complete immunity to the pathogen, and how
these cellular responses can be modulated and applied for improved
vaccine development, bird health, and productivity.
