Beef Cattle Extension: Current News and Information

2012 - 13 Winter Beef Webinar Series

The Winter Beef Webinar Series began November 29th, 2012. Check with your local Extension Agent about accessing the program at your local office.  Producers with high speed internet service can access the meeting at home.  Participants in the on-line meeting will have the opportunity to ask questions through an on-line chat box or over the telephone using a number provided during the program.

  • November 29th - Dr. Matt Poore, Extension Ruminant Nutrition Specialist at North Carolina State University will be the featured speaker for this winter’s first Beef Webinar sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension and scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Thursday, November 29th. Dr. Poore will discuss the use of by-product feeds for both stocker and cow-calf production. He has conducted research with byproduct supplementation strategies for several years with a focus on level of supplementation and frequency of feeding. Some of his supplementation frequency research has compared feeding calves 3X per week to daily feeding with interesting results.
  • January 15th - Dr. Alex White, former Instructor, Dept. of Applied and Agricultural Economics at Virginia Tech, will be the featured speaker for the Beef Webinar sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension and scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 15th. Dr. White is an Ag Economist, nationally recognized for his expertise in agriculture finance and financial management. Closer to home, Dr. White was a very popular teacher noted for his engaging classes and real world problem solving examples. He now serves as a consultant in agriculture finance and as personal finance advisor in the Blacksburg area. Dr. White will be providing a discussion of "Financial Decision Tools”. This program will build on his previous webinars in 2011 and 2010 with a focus on how to use decision-making tools such as partial budgets and break-even analysis with their financial decisions for 2013.
  • February 12th - Dr. Andrew Griffith, Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist at the University of Tennessee for the third Beef Webinar sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension and scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 12th. He will provide a “Market Outlook for 2013”. Dr. Griffith received his PhD from Oklahoma State University in 2012 and started in his current role in May 2012.  He contributes beef market information to Tennessee’s Market Highlights on a weekly basis. Participants in the on-line meeting will have the opportunity to ask questions through an on-line chat box or over the telephone using a number provided during the program.
  • March 12th - Dr. Scott Greiner, Professor and Extension Animal Scientist at Virginia Tech will be the featured speaker for the fourth Beef Webinar sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension and scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 12th. He will provide cattlemen with tips and advice for “Buying the Right Bull”. Dr. Greiner has led Virginia’s Bull Evaluation Program since his arrival in 1998. Participants in the on-line meeting will have the opportunity to ask questions through an on-line chat box or over the telephone using a number provided during the program.

Check with your local Extension Agent about accessing the program at your local office.  Producers with high speed internet service can access the meeting at home.  Participants in the on-line meeting will have the opportunity to ask questions through an on-line chat box or over the telephone using a number provided during the program.

  • December 6th - Dr. Lawton Stewart, Beef Extension Specialist at the University of Georgia will be the featured speaker for the first Beef Webinar sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension.  He will discuss “Effective, Efficient and Economical Strategies for the Cow Herd this Winter”.  Dr. Stewart received his PhD from Virginia Tech in ruminant nutrition and his research/extension program focuses on forage-based nutrition options for Georgia cattlemen.  
  • January 10th  – Market Outlook - Dr. Derrell Peel, Professor and Livestock Marketing Specialist at Oklahoma State University will be the featured speaker for the second Beef Webinar sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension. He will provide a “Market Outlook for 2012”. Dr. Peel is nationally recognized authority on cattle. Participants in the on-line meeting will have the opportunity to ask questions through an on-line chat box or over the telephone using a number provided during the program.
  • February 7th  – Sound Financial Management for Cattlemen - Dr. Alex White, Instructor, Department of Applied and Agricultural Economics at Virginia Tech will be the featured speaker for the Beef Webinar sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension and scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 7th.  Dr. White is an Ag Economist, nationally recognized for his expertise in agriculture finance and financial management.  Closer to home, Dr. White is a very popular teacher noted for his engaging classes and real world problem solving examples. Dr. White will be providing a discussion of "Financial Management for Cattlemen- Going beyond Schedule F”.
  • March 6th –  Optimizing Forage Production to Increase Profits - Dr. John Andrae, Extension Forage Specialist at Clemson University will be the featured speaker for the Beef Webinar sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension and scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 6th. Dr. Andrae has extensive experience with forages, grazing strategies and beef cattle management. Dr. Andrae will be providing a discussion on “Optimizing Forage Production to Increase Profits”.
