The 2018 Virginia Ram Lamb Performance Test program has begun with the deilvery of 114 rams delivered on May 1, 2018. Ninety test/sale rams (13 Fall Dorset, 6 Winter Dorset, 2 Fall Suffolk, 43 Winter Suffolk, 2 Winter Crossbred, 2 Winter North Country Cheviot, 5 Fall White Dorper, 2 Winter White Dorper, 4 Fall Katahdin, 5 Winter Katahdin, 3 Winter Montadale, 3 Winter Texel) and 24 custom test (20 Suffolk, 4 Dorset) rams from 16 consignors were delivered. The rams were weighed, had feet trimmed and soaked and scrotal measurements taken. Vaccinations were given for clostridium perfringens types C & D (and tetanus), intranasal IBR-PI3, orf, and the rams were dewormed with levamisole (Prohibit), fenbendazole (Panacur), and moxidectin (Cydectin). Blood samples were taken on rams for codon 171 genotyping. Rams were allocated to five pens based on breed and age test group. Please see below for ram test peformance. The 2018 sale is set for Saturday, August 25th at 1:00 PM.
The Virginia Performance Ram Lamb Test Sale and Field Day will host a Ewe Lamb Sale, immediately following the ram sale. Please see the 2018 Ewe Sale Rules for more information and consignment details. Consignments are open to members in good standing with the Virginia Sheep Producers Association and the Virginia Sheep Seedstock Council.
The program purpose is:
- To provide a standard, impartial postweaning performance test that will furnish records which will be useful to the consignor's breeding program;
- To provide a source of and market for performance tested rams;
- To serve as an educational tool for the sheep industry.
